Independence Day

Happy independence Day!! To all my fellow Indian in desh and abroad. 60yrs since we were free and don't you think we have come a long way from there.

Let me tell you guys something that happened to me today. I work in a pharmacy close to where I live as an Intern. Nothing special about work today, it was just another day of patients and prescriptions. Now, by afternoon comes this old lady, let's call her JM , to pick up her medications. After the customary greetings, she asks me if I'm Indian. Im surprised that she actually recognised me to be "Indian" rather than fumble around with options like "are u hispanic" and crap!On confirmations she goes straight at the questions I bet was in her mind for a couple of days now. She tells me about an Indian couple who live next door and how they hanged "some wriggley thing" and a "face" on the front door. She is curious to know what that is for , but couldn't get herself to ask them. So, I guess Im the next Indian girl she met so she just blurt it out. I tell her that the wriggley thing is a ethnic decorative item which we usually keep on the front door to signify a festival or religious occasion in the house and the face is ward of all the evil. At his point she goes like...."Ahhhh!! So that thing is to welcome someone into the house and the face to keep away nasty things !! i get it ..I get it" I can no longer control my laughter but I manage to tell her that she got a hang of what they are. Now she thinks she is ready to go into their house with this info and tell them she understands Indian-ness ;) (Don't know what she means! )
To top it off, this whole conversation had a serious , want to know tone to it - which I found rather interesting. Good to know people want to know about our customs for knowledge, especially after another conversation where I was told that indians want to keep things to themselves rather then comeout and mingle with the crowd.

Phew, so much for ppl's opinions. Let me know if you had any incidences like this!
