Independence Day

Happy independence Day!! To all my fellow Indian in desh and abroad. 60yrs since we were free and don't you think we have come a long way from there.

Let me tell you guys something that happened to me today. I work in a pharmacy close to where I live as an Intern. Nothing special about work today, it was just another day of patients and prescriptions. Now, by afternoon comes this old lady, let's call her JM , to pick up her medications. After the customary greetings, she asks me if I'm Indian. Im surprised that she actually recognised me to be "Indian" rather than fumble around with options like "are u hispanic" and crap!On confirmations she goes straight at the questions I bet was in her mind for a couple of days now. She tells me about an Indian couple who live next door and how they hanged "some wriggley thing" and a "face" on the front door. She is curious to know what that is for , but couldn't get herself to ask them. So, I guess Im the next Indian girl she met so she just blurt it out. I tell her that the wriggley thing is a ethnic decorative item which we usually keep on the front door to signify a festival or religious occasion in the house and the face is ward of all the evil. At his point she goes like...."Ahhhh!! So that thing is to welcome someone into the house and the face to keep away nasty things !! i get it ..I get it" I can no longer control my laughter but I manage to tell her that she got a hang of what they are. Now she thinks she is ready to go into their house with this info and tell them she understands Indian-ness ;) (Don't know what she means! )
To top it off, this whole conversation had a serious , want to know tone to it - which I found rather interesting. Good to know people want to know about our customs for knowledge, especially after another conversation where I was told that indians want to keep things to themselves rather then comeout and mingle with the crowd.

Phew, so much for ppl's opinions. Let me know if you had any incidences like this!

flowerful

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

.....went my favourite song from the movie "The Sound of Music". Roses have always been a special attraction to me, especially the mini roses.Blooming in various colors and in closely spaced branches, roses give a beauty almost undescribable. I have always wanted to grow roses in my garden but I never had a garden in real. So the compensation was pots of all the flowers I want - of different colors, sizes and shapes. This summer has been really special as for the first time after I moved to the US I have 3 colors of roses along with a bunch of other flowers (ofcourse in pots) on the deck on our new home. My little wish is to share my happiness with you all there....

couple of other favorites...

The Big 3

They are always on mind and keep coming to the foreground time to time. These are the 3 fictions books I read long time back but they are so close to me that I can never let them go. I'm sure there are books lot better than these, in many aspects, but these are the ones I endear. These are the ones --

1) Prodigal Daughter (Jeffery Archer) - I was introduced to Jeff Archer way back in middle school , but it was in high school that I developed a liking or his books. With good narration and clear setting, the know how to keep the story going. This book is about a daughter of a polish immigrant who goes on to become the president. It revolves around her life, how she takes things for granted, gets hurt in course of the unexpected and learns lessons of life the hard way. Everything she learns and does, she does with passion - from running the Baron group of hotels to running for the president. Its that passion that she displays that endeared her to me.

2) Memoirs of a Geisha (Arthur Golden) - First introduced to me by S during my Bachelor's years , this book caught my attention immediately. The detail, narration and the entire setting captured my liking almost immediately. It was so good that I couldn't rest till I went ahead and bought a copy myself. I especially liked the elaborate description about kimono, nobu san and the gradual transformation from cute chiyo to the beautiful sayuri. The book brings out the subtlety of a woman's feeling , her adaptation to the life she is forced to choose, the balance of emotion she tries to get for she loves and those who love her.In all, this is one masterpiece in written word.

3) The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho) - The latest I read of the three, this book took some time to capture my attention. My husband's uncle mentioned about this book in one of our conversations and handed it to me when I went to visit him. He said it was amazing but I wasn't interested til the journey started. Santiago's journey in the desert of the middle east itself set the mood for talk about self discovery and questions about life. The importance and satisfaction one gets in pursuing his dreams, the realizations about life, the philosophical outlook of life , all of them brought home the thought that "simple things are the most valuable and only wise people appreciate them", as reinforced again and again by Coelho. I have no words to describe how I feel when I think of this books , the rush of emotions and thought in my mind make it difficult for me to express the thoughts coherently. But I can say for sure, this book will be remembered for life and its lessons reminded in every step.

P.S : Let me tag Preetam, Snehith and Navisa , who I know read and love books. Anyone else who reads this consider yourself tagged. Let us know what u love.

Welcome Summer

Summer is here and so is my vacation time. After what seemed like forever , Im done with 2 semesters and will dedicate my summer tending for my newly acquired home and work.I feel like I've been making lists of stuff to buy to "fill"(to D's dread!!) my home with. Ahh, soo looking forward for binge shopping this weekend!! wwohhooo...

Apart from the lists ,my notebooks meant for drawing medchem structures and writing drug names, are filled with plans for summer. From cleaning and setting up the guest bedroom to buying an naked foundation cream for myself, I've made a plan. Collection coupons during the exams, so I can go check out the stores to talking to frens for recommendations , I've done it all , and all to saturation. But now, all I want to do stick to the couch and watch TV!! Oh ya, read blogs of course...

About my new found love- our new home, living here feels like living back in Austin. We had really missed that life while living in an old apartment after moving to phily. Not because we didn't like old houses, but coz we were pampered while living in new apartment where amenities and the arrangement is way different. Now this home seems to have got our lives to normal. Normal as we perceive it. That's relief!!

Now that I soaked it the relief, its time go back and hit reality ....
will keep you posted

Go Colts!!

yayyy!!!!! Colts are the champions...AFC chaps with the one and only Manning!! Way to go man!! It was one awesome game yesterday , with nail biting moments to game deciding catches, to the ever calm Tony Dungy.
All day I spent anticipating what would happen...it was this year or may be never for colts...they came thru till the finals to face arch rivals the Patriots and they did an impressive job beating them.Payton proved himself again and shut everyone else. From a disappointing 21-3 to 34-38 , it was a game that would go down in history.
Now all the Colts have to do is to g odown to Miami and ride over the bears.

P.S. After what was a loooooong day today, I finally get to celebrate colts victory now.
